Appointments

Initial Consultation

To schedule an initial appointment, or if you have more questions, please call me at 210-663-9462.  I answer my own phone.  If I am in session you will get my voice mail.

Please leave your information and I will call you back. I make every effort to return calls within the same business day. Make sure to let me know if it's all right to leave a message at your call back number, just in case I miss you.  You are welcome to send me an email, but keep in mind that emails are not secure and I cannot insure your confidentiality over email.

I offer free 10 minute consultations over the phone for prospective clients.  I will need to know briefly, in a few sentences, your reason for seeking counseling or coaching.

During this consultation I will ask you some questions to determine whether the services I provide will fit with your needs. If you feel comfortable making an appointment, we will set one at this time.  If it turns out that we are not a good fit, I will offer you some referrals to other therapists if you would like.

Once we have an appointment scheduled, I can email you the forms I will need for you to fill out before our session.  If you cannot accept forms by email you can complete them at my office before the session.  I will have them waiting for you on a clipboard in the waiting room (please allow 15 minutes before the appointment).

Our first appointment is the Initial Interview.  During this appointment I will ask you questions about why you decided to consult with me and what you hope to get out of our work together.  I'll ask you some background questions and about how you are handling your present distress.  Together we'll set some goals for the sessions we will have.  If we agree that I cannot help you, I will refer you to some other therapist who may specialize in your particular needs.

If you are in crisis, please call your local EMS:

Here are some hotline numbers:

  • Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-SUICIDE
  • The Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) will automatically transfer you to the rape crisis center nearest you, anywhere in the nation. 1-800-656-HOPE
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (7233), 800-787-3224 (TDD)

Follow Up Appointments

At the beginning of each session I will ask you what you would like to focus on to give you the best use of that session.  Most of the session time will be spent on these goals and how you can get nearer to completing them.

At about 35 to 40 minutes into the session we will review the work done that day. We will also discuss how you can continue that work in between sessions (homework). At the end of each session you will be invited to give feedback about how the therapy is progressing for you.

Each session is 50 minutes. Most people I work with meet with me either weekly or every other week.  Payment is due at the beginning of the session.

I require a 24 hour notice for all cancellations.  If you cancel with less notice, it will be considered a late cancellation/no show.  It is office policy to charge for appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.  I usually have an extensive waiting list of people who would be happy to take the appointment if they have some time to arrange their schedules.

The number of sessions you will require varies from person to person based on their goals and needs.  Most people see progress in an average of 6 to 8 sessions.  The more committed you are to working on your goals, the quicker you will see progress. We will look at your goals and your progress towards them as we go along to determine what your particular needs are.
